Late Monarch Caterpillars

Monarch caterpillar 2020-1, color

Late Monarch Caterpillars

I am doing my small part to keep this species going by maintaining several plant varieties that butterflies enjoy, including milkweeds. Here, we find a monarch butterfly caterpillar (Danaus plexippus) feeding on swamp milkweed (Asclepias). There were a dozen or so caterpillars munching away at the plants that were all but dried up last week. Today, the caterpillars are gone and I assume have formed chrysalises in the undergrowth around the milkweed that has dried and withered. I hope the caterpillars emerge and make it safely down to Mexico, and their progeny return in 2021.
