Coils Of Shadow And Light
Coils Of Shadow And Light
As many of my friends recognize, I love working in black and white. The ability to mold light and dark to sculpt an image is mesmerizing and (I hesitate to say) somewhat addicting.
I’ve spent a lot of time studying and admiring the works of the master of black and white photography. Ansel Adams, W. Eugene Smith, and Imogen Cunningham come immediately to mind, to name but three. Each time I sit down and study one of their masterpieces, I’m drawn to how powerful and unique their photography is. And, how they ‘play’ with light.
With the works of those masters in mind, the inspiration for this set of images goes way back. I’ve had this exact setting in my mind for at least 10 years, longer most likely. I saw in my mind’s eye pretty much exactly what I portray in these three works. I saw light moving through coils; shining off the metal; shadows carving intricate patterns. I only needed to get my camera out and shoot.
And, that’s precisely what I did. So, what do you think? Do you have a favorite in the set? Let me know in the comments below, and thank you.
