After weeks of cold, snow, and then rain, we had some spring-like weather Saturday. The night was still cool, but pleasant and quite clear and free from water vapor (for Baltimore). I took the opportunity to train my camera at the night sky. The moon was nearly full and all together gorgeous.

Viewing the night sky in Baltimore is a labor of love, as the city lights of Baltimore and Washington DC wash out many of the stars. However, major constellations, such as Orion, are visible, as is its sword and the Great Orion Nebula (M42). This is a stellar nursery, with new stars forming through the expanse of the gases in the nebula. It is breath-taking to see through a telescope or camera.

Orion is a winter constellation and quickly moving towards the west, to disappear as spring turns to summer. If you can, step outside an hour or two after sunset and take a look at this beautiful constellation.
